We have just got into stock this fantastic Unidirectional Carbon Fiber Tape.  The tape is made using unidirectional carbon fibres held together by lightweight glass cross-stitching. It is similar to and a replacement for our very popular non-crimp tape that was discontinued by the manufacturer a while back.

We have this available in 250g and 650g weights and widths of 50mm and 100mm.  You can see in the photos below the 50mm 250g and the 100mm 650g. Fingers for scale! Further pictures are on our website listings linked further down.

The minimal cross stitch results in negligible crimp of the carbon fibres but does help to facilitate wet-out, particularly in resin infusion processing where the cross stitch assists with resin flow through the tape. The tape offers excellent conformity and drape but at the same time, the high quality stitching makes the tape perfectly stable and easy-to-handle. The tape is compatible with all standard resin systems including polyester, vinylester and epoxy resin although is ideally matched to epoxy resin owing to its high mechanical performance.

This is suited to a range of applications including:
  • Sporting equipment (skis, archery bow limbs etc.)
  • Marine (yacht stringer reinforcement)
  • Aerospace (wing spars etc.)
  • Motorsport (aero wings, structural components)
  • Pipe wrapping/reinforcement
This can be processed by hand, vacuum bagging and also by resin infusion.  With resin infusion, the cross stitching allows a resin path between the layers of material to aid with wetting out.  However, it will wet out slower than with a conventional woven cloth so it is beneficial to slow the infusion down by clamping the resin feed and/or allowing resin into the fabric for a bit longer before clamping.  This will help ensure the resin doesn't flow across the top so quickly leading to the false impression the infusion is done, when in reality you need a little more time and resin to ensure it fully wets out.

Both weights and widths are in stock and available for immediate dispatch with the 250g tape available here: 250g UD Carbon Tape  and the 650g tape available here: 650g UD Carbon Tape.

The tape is available by the linear meter and, as with most our materials, there are several volume discount rates for larger quantity orders.
