I do have epoxy resin that I will be using for parts, could I use that as a surface coat?

Hello,

So I attempted to create mold of a engine cover. I cleaned it with IPA and added 3 coats of Partall wax, I then coated the part with Fibreglast tooling gel coat and finally with fiberglass reinforcement with epoxy resin. When I went to remove the plug, it partially came out with ease but certain areas where stuck to the mold an weren't coming out without break the mold( which I did). I'm going to try again this weekend but with 8 coats of wax and to layers of PVA. I also read that gel coat is the worst choice and that I should be using a epoxy surface coat instead of a gelcoat. I've read a few article, seen videos where they swear by gel coats. Can anyone chime in and drop some knowledge? Throwing away material is starting to get expensive. Thanks in advance!
