I'm currently playing around with some skinning of some plastic interior parts.
My current process is:
- Clean part with degreaser
- 100% Sand/Key to a rough finish (60 grit), completely removing all paint/coating, then scoring with a knife.
- Clean with degreaser again
- Apply XCR Black Base coat and wait to tack-stage (taking about 2.5 - 3 hours
@ 18-20 ish degrees)
- Apply carbon cloth
This is where my problems start, as the XCR base coat doesnt seem to viscous enough (I'm mixing 60g total weight per mix using accurate digital scales).
The XCR is creeping to edges of the parts with gravity, and thinning out too much on the higher surfaces, which is also leaving me with nibs on the edges in places which is fine as long as I catch them before they harden.
Has anyone tried painting plastic parts black then using a spray tack adhesive rather than using an epoxy base coat to lay the carbon over parts? This seems like it could be a more reliable way of laying the carbon down to me but I'm concerned with compatibility of the spray adhesive and epoxy., and the obvious lack of a base coat of epoxy under the cloth itself, with the first epoxy to hit being the first top coat layer.
