Hi,

I posted a new thread a few days ago regarding the use of Carbon nanotube enhanced epoxy in my small structural parts project.

I can see that Matt from the staff has answered, but when trying to access the thread, I keep getting a "404" error ?

I have since then had very positive replies from the NanoCyl people, and they are now helping me along Smile

I still have a tech question though.. My first tests indicate that your infusion epoxy is the best for my small parts, the prototypes used for strenght testing are very close to the goal, but the Epocyl additive may bribg me the few ten of percent more strenght that I need.

The question is: What type of Epoxy is the Infusion grade EC epoxy?  Is it Bisphenol-A based or "tetrafunctional" ?

This has a bearing on what precise type of additive I need to get from NanoCyl.

I will of course be posting my results in the forum, in due time ...

Cheers ..

Thanks a gazillion "Pertabolis"  Smile

I thought something like that might be the cause, but could not work it out..

I will post some updates to both threads when I get to work on the Carbon Nanotube Epoxy

Cheers!

Hi Dravis,

Yes, the reason your other post comes up with an error is to do with the way the 'url re-writer' parsed your topic title. It seems they overlooked how to handle illegal characters in the parser. If I get chance I'll look into it.

In answer to your questions, it's Bis A. Click here to download the MSDS for our IN2 Epoxy Infusion Resin which shows the chemical constituents of the system.

Let us know how you get on Smile

I have now ordered some EpoCyl NC R128-02 Bisphenol-A based Carbon nanotube Resin. Smile

This is simply a standard epoxy resin additive, containing a high percentage of multi-walled Carbon nanotubes, which can be mixed in with normal laminating Epoxy resin.

The Nanocyl company states that addition of a 1/6 part Epocyl resin will increse the internal strenght of the epoxy matrix by up to 100%  !!! and facilitate a stronger bond between the resin and "plastic" fibres, such as Kevlar, Twaron, Dyneema or diolene fibres.

The carbon nanotube content also increases the thermal conductivity of the resin, to make thermal curing and post curing much more uniform.

The carbon nanotubes makes the epoxy itself electrically conductive, which may or may not be an advantage.

I'm very much looking forward to doing the first testing BigGrin

That's some very very interesting thing going on here. Cant wait to hear about the results!!

Do you plan to compare a part made the "standard" way and the same part with your nanotubes?

Good luck with your project.

Yes, my plan is to make a few simple geometric "lay-ups" one set using Epocyl enhanced resin, and one using standard EL2

Both sets will be made in "compression" molds made on my lathe, in hard alloy aluminium.  The parts will be cured and post-cured int the molds.

First sets will be "test samples" which will be tested to destruction in a  hydraulic press, using a 1000 Kg load cell.

I will simply take the "bar-shaped" test sample and load it up in the press, with a couple of micrometer dials mounted to see the stiffness of the material.

I will be very happy if the Epocyl enhanced part shows just a 15 to 30% increase in strenght and stiffness.

watch this thread later .... BigGrin
