Hi,

I have made a pod for my hang gliding instruments using your core foam, and skinned it with the XCR skinning starter kit.  I have got as far as sticking the carbon twill to the black basecoat, and it seems to have worked well.  What is the best way to add a second layer of carbon (for strength):  Do I need to use the black basecoat again on top of the first layer of carbon twill, or should I stick the second layer in place using coating resin?  Or does it make no difference other than cosmetic?  (The piece is now completely black, of course.)

Thanks in advance,

Oliver

The black basecoat is in essence just a pigmented XCR resin.  its purpose, other than helping stick the fabric down, is to blot out the colour of any underlying surface.

You don't need the black base coat for that purpose now to just use the XCR as a laminating resin to apply the next layer of cloth.

If the resin has already cured, you will need to key the surface  with 120 grit paper  so the new resin can get a nice grip to the old.

Perfect, thank you Warren.  That is what I thought, but as a complete beginner (this is my first project) I thought it better to ask.  Thank you for adding the note about keying the surface; the resin has, indeed, cured.

(This forum is a great resource.  Having quick and easy access to clear advice certainly makes me more likely to try these sorts of projects in future.)
