So.....first off, yes I am just getting my feet wet in the world of composites.

Working on making a mold for infusion for the attached item and need some help.  I'm trying to make a putty mold for the item attached and have gone as far to apply the gel coat.  I am apprehensive to add the putty before knowing it will actually work so I have a couple questions.

As you can see from the pics, I used clay to form about 1/2 an inch around the entire outside as a barrier.  Will I be okay to add the putty and have a workable mold?  Would you guys go about prepping this a different way?

From the looks of it, it appears as this can be done in a one piece.
