Hi!

A friend of mine is working on a project of making underwater fishing spears from EC carbon tubes.

To avoid problems with the water pressure crushing or distorting the tubes, He is considering filling the tubes with a liquid ..

Radiator coolant antifreeze seems an obvious choice, since these mad underwater fishermen dive in from the ice in winter .. Blink
We all know that water expands radically when frozen, so that would certainly crack the tubes ..

How is the chemical tolerance of the different EC carbon tubes to Ethylen Glycol?

How do they stand up to temperatures down to -20 Celcius?   (They will not have to be anything but "stable" at these temps, once "in use" they will be above freezing..
(Can't dive in frozen water .. Alien )

Hi Dravis,

The temperature on its own would only increase the brittleness of the tubes, but if as you say they just need to be stable then there shouldn't be a problem in theory.

The Ethylene Glycol is going to be the problem as the chemical resistance of epoxy to it is only fair so over time you would expect degradation of the epoxy matrix.  Exactly how much of an effect, concentration etc and how quickly would only be determinable from testing.

I've no idea what it's made of, but what about Evans waterless coolant?

A. Evans Waterless Coolants are patented synthetic non-toxic liquids blended with a non-aqueous proprietary inhibitor package.

Why not simply a high density polyurethane foam?

Hi!

The liquid is used for two purposes .. one:  The pressure problem, two: to give the spear a neutral boyance..

It's being tested as I'm writing this ..

Here's a picture of one end of the spear ..

Solid point, did not think of the buoyancy... Tricky little conundrum there!

Update!

We solved this problem in another way ... The tubes will be filled with epoxy resin with added low density filler ..  I found a way of reducing the density  to slightly below that of water.
(it involves nothing more sophisticated than a bucket of tapwater in which I suspend the mixing cup of resin and stir in filler until the cup floats with the level of resin equal to the level of water .. )

This also greatly enhances the strength of the "spears" and protects against crushing them..

Nice solution. I was thinking a filler such as Glass Bubbles/Microspheres might be useful especially if you are trying to reduce the density.

Thanks Warren!  Smile

I suggested a mixture of glass bubbles and a structural filler, like the West systems "High Density Filler"

I'm not sure how far the "Spear -maker" has gotten along the lines of filling the tubes .. hopefully there will be an update soon ..
