Yes, I agree completely with Matt!   I would add "complexity" to the equation as well .. Start out with simple shapes .. buy some twillweave E-glass, and experiment with that - The process is precisely the same as with the Carbon, but much cheaper to make mistakes with --  I started out with Laminating and vac-bagging very simple shapes using West Systems epoxy (simple pump system for mixing) and E-glass .. Made things like motorbike mudguards and covers (Moulds copied from plastic parts)

Good luck --

Welcome to the forum. There's nothing wrong with doing composites on a budget; we all start somewhere. One really obvious (but sometimes overlooked) way to perfect more advanced composites processes whilst keeping costs under control is to make sure you're working on physically smaller things. The processes, materials and learning curve are basically the same whether you're making desktop sized objects or vehicle sized components but the cost and time is very different (just look at projects like Andy's Carbon Fibre Noble!).

Once you've perfected your technique on smaller parts then you can tackle the larger stuff without doing your learning (and mistakes) and larger parts - which of course costs more in time and materials.

Hello,

My name is Codrin, I live in Isleworth and I am a newbie in composites. I will try to learn as much I can from your forum( I already spot some very interesting topics). I want to make some parts from carbon fiber for my car. I start to buy what I need, but I am on low budget ... so till I have everything ... I will study your forum.

Kind Regards,

Codrin B.
