Hey matt. Welcome, there's nothing wrong with a bit of consolidation with vac for wet layup. I done a few wet lay mirror covers and made sure they were vac bagged as the quality was far superior.
Like you I've not done much infusion, but with anything good prep and sorting out the process is key to a good part.

Just a quick hello, not done any composite work since 2001. I use to work for an Aerospace firm making helicopter blades with prepreg. I now plan to start making some parts for a motocross bike I'm restoring. Also a project for my son.
Probably gonna be lots of silly questions coming over the next few months and beyond. I will start them by asking if anyone tried vac bagging a wet layup to help with consolidation and surface finish? On a very low budget and thought this might be a good comprimise and alternative to prepreg. Never done resin infusion so thought i would try this at a later date when i get a bit more experience.
