Hello,

I have introduced myself in the introductions section and in it, I have described how I wish to pursue making parts for my wife's Mazda MX-5.

However, after speaking with a good friend of mine who is a Violinist, I was asked how hard a Violin case would be to make. Looking at his current violin case, being basically a 30" x 10" x 6" elongated cube with rounded corners, I said I thought it would be fairly simple. Immediately he offered to pay me a reasonable amount of cash for this project.

Remember I have never made a single carbon fiber part in my life, though I cannot imagine a top and a bottom being very difficult to produce. Even if I fail 2 or 3 times, I am being paid for my learning... Not a bad deal I would say.

Now to my problem. I have found everything I need to make this case; hinges, latches, handle (I am contemplating making a handle though), breather valve for air flights, foam, valuer, memory foam for soft padding and silk over that, etc...

The one piece I cannot find is the seal. I have looked at dozens of fiberglass, ABS, and even some carbon fiber cases online, and they all have the same trim seal to make the box air tight regardless of manufacture. I have to assume this is some standard for sealing these type of boxes. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out the term to search for. I tried valence, extrusion, trim, molding and many others I cannot remember.

I figure as this is a forum dedicated to people who make composite items, someone has had to make an equipment case that needed to seal properly and may be able to assist me.

Thanks in advance guys.

Flightcase - seal  hybrid extrusion -- -- BigGrin

7mm Locator Hybrid E2295

Hybrids are meant to be used for both sides of the case, just turn one set 180 degrees and they match ..

This can be bent carefully to follow large radius rounded corners. You can run it all around the edge of both case halves, and seal the point where they meet with epoxy.

A rubber gasket can be pressed into the notch on both parts, creating a very good seal ..

I've made several CF gun cases with this, by just making a plug in the correct shape for one half of the case out of MDF or Foam --

Good luck ..

I appreciate the help Dravis, but those are aluminium and the rubber seals they offer just water seal the aluminium extrusions. I need a rubber or PVC seal.

What you need then is "neoprene gasket sheet"  You can make/ mould in your own sealing flanges and cut out the appropriate gasket seal from neoprene sheet .. You can also have the seal custom made, but that is probably not an option for a one-off violin case ..

And -- I personally own a number of Pelican cases, and have tried to make "carbon-copies" of them .. It is not easy ... It is a lot of work, and quite frankly not worth the effort to try to make the case "air-tight" --

The cases I have made, using the aluminium edges with double seal, are waterproof to the extent that they will float, and not take on water even when partially submerged, but they will not keep it out under pressure, so they are not "pressure-waterproof" like the Peli-cases"

when pressed under water about 30 - 50 cm, they did leak some drops of water over a few minutes ..

The aluminium edges also makes the cases quite hard-wearing
