Hi all!!
Name's Randy and I'm new around here and new to composite construction. I live in eastern Ohio, USA, roughly half way between Cleveland OH, and Pittsburgh PA. So if there are any members in this area, please get in touch with me!!
My interest in composite construction started about 3 years ago when I got to thinking about making custom car parts with fiberglass for myself. Googled around, Youtube videos, etc, etc, studying up on the various ways of making custom parts. Really, at first, I wasn't interested in making custom car parts, all I really wanted to make was a fiberglass spare tire cover for the trunk of my car. You know, the piece of cardboard the auto makers cover with carpet and throw in the trunk of you car to cover the spare tire. The stuff that warps as soon as something heavy is sat on it, or it comes in contact with moisture.
From there, the wheels in my head got to turning, what about fender flares, hood scoops, wings, reproduction parts, etc... I'm a car guy and thinking this might be a good business to get into, change of careers, become self employed making car parts instead of my current job, which sucks. You know - 'do something you love and you will never work a day in your life' saying? Thinking it thru, there would be problems switching from my current job to doing car parts for a living. So scratch that idea. but I still want to be self employed.
This past spring, I got to thinking about what I really love to do, and that's play with toys, just like any other child does. So I started to look into radio controlled multi-rotor aircraft, you know, "drones" as the media likes to call them. So I built a quadcopter out of wood to learn about the subject, (I have a video of the first flights online if anyone is interested). Spent part of the summer learning CAD software and designed another quadcopter.
I've hand laid up, without a vacuum, a couple of carbon fiber parts for the prototype. I need to learn about vacuum forming parts, the ins-and-outs of it.
I'll be posting in hand layup section where I'm at on this shortly. Need to take a few pictures first.
Thanks,
Randy
