HI ALL.
I want to build a waterfall for my chameleon tank but unsure how I get the finish i want. I've seen lots of videos on youtube of how to get a perfect glass finish on a resinned object but that is far from what I want, as i want a stoney texture (granite look and feel) as well as tree bark. I've been told I need to make a mold out of polyurethane expanding foam and to resin straight to it meaning that the foam will be permanently attached which is not what i want either, then
put a gell coat on top. As I understand it this would make it shiny but waterproof. As i don't want a shiny finish i was wondering if I could mix or put sand on it while it is wet. I would be very grateful for your experience and comments and help with this as i have never used resin before but up for the tasks ahead.
With thanks NAT.

If it is a stone effect you are looking to recreate, as in the stone of underneath a waterfall, then mixing sand into the resin might give you a rough texture you want. You would also be likely to need a pigment to help the base colour.
Using the foam as a base can be a good idea. As it won't be seen, if you didn't want a foam backing, you could easily cut it out afterwards. If you do that, I would recommend using a layer of
Woven Glass Fabric
to strengthen and reinforce the object.
Another thing to check is that any resin you use is safe for use with pets as they may knaw at it or chew it. None of our resins are certified food safe (or equivalent) so it might be best consulting with a pet specialist to be safe.

to add something to what warren said, make sure you use dry sand if you do so.
Put it for some time in the oven to remove all the moist.
Epoxy and water/moist arent good friends

Thanks guys. I had planned to put in a couple of layers of glass to help with the strength. Also is there anything that polyurethane foam doesn't stick to so I can mix a bit at a time to make different shapes?
