Hi, I'm just working on some structural calcs; does anyone have the material properties for the fibre used in the standard carbon cloth, tensile strength, youngs modulus etc. any info like this would be really appreciated.

The fibre type used in many of our standard cloths is the Toray T300 Here's some data on the fibre;

Hi,

I was woundering if you had any information on general properties on any laminations using your Epoxy EL2 laminating resin and your standard 195g 3k 2/2 twill carbon fibre?

I know this depends alot on the quality of production and variouse outher factors but it would be a useful guide.

Any help would be great!

Hi Harry,

We don't at the moment although I agree this would be something nice to have, particularly as a lot of our customers will be using the two materials (EL2 and our 3k carbon) together so some general performance figures for this combination would be good. You're right that it will vary significantly depending on the quality of the lamination, the resin-to-fibre ratio and the orientation of the plies but still, I'll see if we can get some mechnical data together in the future.

I can understand why this data would be really usefull, so I have calculated the properties of a typical laminate based upon the EL2 and the standard 200g twill, These figures are by no means guaranteed, processing variations will have a huge influence on the final performance of any laminate,

This Is based upon a fibre orientation of 0/90deg to the loading, post-cured resin and a fibre/resin ratio of 60/40 - All of these figures are presented for approximate information only and are NOT A GUARANTEE of performance for obvious reasons.

Hi Paul,

            I assume this calculation assumes the TORAY 300 mentioned previously.

I have some additional queries shown below:-

1. What would be the impact of using a stiffer 2x2 TWILL  cloth based upon TENAX UMS 40 or TORAYCA M340J for example ?

2. Can easy composites supply such a clith described in 1

3.  Does your calcutation apply equally to the wet lay up material or PRE-PEG material

4.  What is the difference in properties if the carbon/kevlar 2x2 TWILL material is used?

Hey Paul,

my name is Chris and as part of my BEng Bachelor Project I am trying to simulate a tensile test using ABAQUS and see how the results obtained compare to the experimental results obtained form an actual tensile test. I want to manufacture CFRP laminate specimen and test these on the tensile test machine. 
I was wondering if you guys also sell UD carbon fibre cloth?

On this forum page (http://www.talkcomposites.com/18/Carbon-cloth-material-properties) you calculated the properties of a typical laminate based upon the EL2 and the standard 200g twill. Would it possible for you to give me the approximate properties of a typical laminate based upon the EL2 and the UD carbon fibre cloth. Most importantly I would need the Young’s Modulus 0°, Young’s Modulus 90°, Ult. Tensile Strength 0°, Ult. Tensile Strength 90°, Ult. Tensile Strain 0° and Ult. Tensile Strain 90°.

Also, do you know the mechanical properties of the cured epoxy resin you guys use? I would especially require the Young's Modulus, the Poisson's ratio and the shear modulus. I would need this data to theoretically calculate the mechanical properties of the CFRP laminate as input data for the ABAQUS software. 

I would really appreciate your help and thank you in advance!

Hi Chris,

For the kind of simulation you are doing, the approximate calculated figures based on Paul's previous work would unlikely be precise enough for your needs.  Our CarbonFibre Unidirectional 250g also uses a T300 fibre so the T300 data table Paul posted in his first post would be relevant to your calculations.

Note that the property of the resin is affected by the hardener used and also by the way it is processed. The figures above were obtained by the manufacturer after a cure cycle of 24 hours at room temperature (23C +-2C) with a 15 hour post cure at 60C.  Your cure conditions might well vary.

I was wondering if you could tell me if all of these carbon cloths are made from T300 fiber.  If not, what is the fiber?

I need the info to calculate material properties in the finished part.

Except for the 1k 90g. those fabrics are made using grafil TR30S or TR50S fibres http://mrcfac.com/home-cfd/products-cfd/pyrofil-fiber/

The grafil fibres perform slightly better than the T300 in the older carbon we used to supply.

The 1k 90gsm (either finish) uses the T300 fibre http://www.toraycfa.com/pdfs/T300DataSheet.pdf
