Good afternoon,
I am trying to calculate the relative density of the honeycombs I ordered as precisely as I can and ideally cross-check them by different methods. Relative density is the ratio of the density to the density of a given reference, for example the ratio of aluminium honeycomb to a solid block of aluminium the same size. Do you have any reference figures for this? Unfortunately there would be variation on how expanded the honeycombs are.
It can also be calculated/measured in a few different ways:
To calculate this using the densities provided on the datasheets, I would need to have a reference density for the materials. I've looked up 3003 Al and 5052 Al densities which seem to be of the order:
3003 - 2730 kg/m
3
5052 - 2680 kg/m
3
Would you agree with these and do you have any figures for the Aluminium used in the honeycombs you supply?
Do you have any bulk density figures for Nomex? I realise these calculations are likely to be skewed (especially with Nomex) because of whatever is used to bond the materials.
An alternative is a pure geometric analysis using the cell size to calculate the expected area of honeycomb compared to voids. That has issues because of the non-ideal honeycomb shape due to manufacturing.
The final way I could think of would be to image a section of each honeycomb, then process the image to calculate the area of honeycomb and voids.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

I often use paper rope that has a wire in it to allow bends for making stiffening ridges. It's cheap...
