Hello all,

I was looking at the new flexible epoxy of easycomposites. Could this be used to create a flexible product which when bent would flex and then return back to its original shape? Like for example a dirt bike fender.

Alao, how would you select the materials? 2 layers of CF? The product wouldn't need to be very strong, more cosmetic and covering.

Lastly, is the flexible epoxy UV resistant? If not, is there a good coating that won't crack if flexed?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Wabba,

Yes, you could use the epoxy to create a part that coul flex and then would return to its original shape. Although we've not manufactured any such parts ourselves (yet) the intention in sourcing such a resin was that it could be used in this way. Whether a fibre reinforced flexible epoxy outperforms alternative plastics or composites at this task I don't know but in the testing that we've done it certainly shows good promise. Just this morning I've added some smaller 1KG packs to the website that are more suited to trialing the resin than the previously available 4kg pack so if you want to give it a go, they're online and available now.

For the reinforcement, I would consider diolen as a good fibre to reinforce the flexible epoxy with; diolen holds up to abuse very well and might compliment the flexible epoxy in providing a flexible composite material designed to take a lot of impact and 'bounce back'.

The epoxy has UV stabalisers but, like all epoxies, it is not UV *proof*. Since applying a UV proof coating would be difficult (given the very flexible nature of the epoxy) I think I would be tempted to try it without.

I hope this helps. Let us know how your project goes!

Best regards, Matt

Thank you for that Matt, much appreciated.

That is good news about the 1kg size. Once I get the plug/mold done I'll give this a try.

Best regards
