Hey,

So ive tried using a new mold made out of a plastic tub. Sounds crude but there is reason.
Either way, the epoxy resin isn't laying flat inside it as I've seen it in other moulds. It's spreading and creating holes, as if it's oil in a pan. Could it be the release wax being too thick? (3 coats), I've never seen it before so I'm assuming it's got to be the wax or mould.

Help please as I don't want air pockets and shoddy parts!!

Thanks

Hello
I am assuming you are doing a wet layup with a brush and hopefully vacuum bagging it. It is normal that it will bead up when you brush the resin into the mold. At least its that way for me. Once you have your carbon fiber placed and stippled out the resin will even out.You then put on your peel ply /perferrated release film /, then breather, then place the works into a vacuum bag and hold a full vac overnight. You may still get some pin holes with this method. Infusion or prepreg is the way to go for perfect parts. IF you are just wet laying up your part then you are going to get a poor surface but usable as far as strength goes. This would need to be painted.
Hope this helps.
Fred

Hi Fred, thanks. I was just wet laying it as I've got no budget for equipment at the moment and this is just a home project for the moment. The resin did bead a lot, but what I found was instead of leaving it to go tacky, I applied the first layer of fiber to it wet, and then layered up as per normal. I was able to push all the air out with a brush and I've got a nearly flawless finish. Thoroughly impressed with the result - only a few tiny air bubbles, but they're less than 1mm each so can't tell for a look!

Hopefully one day I'll have an oven and be able to bag stuff up!!

Thanks,

Jase

Glad you had success right away.
I was where you are right now. Here is how you can get a vacuum pump for free.
Get any refrigerator or freezer from the scrap yard or on garbage day. Take out the pump assembly for that is all you need.
There are 2 tubes going into the motor. One pumps one sucks.
Once you have cut the tubes off simply connect this to your home made catch pot and your golden. I used this setup for a long time and it pulls a good vacuum, enough to crush styrofoam. It won't last as long as a proper pump but you will get many hours out of it.
Hope this helps

That sounds brilliant thanks! I'll keep a lookout for a fridge! Our scrapyards over here in the UK won't let you take anything, they're generally collection only, then recycle. But I can have a look anyway! Thanks for the tip!

Over here in Canada they are put out on special garbage day pickups. You can google instructions on how to convert it. There are tons of stuff on youtube.
