Hi Gents, my name is Jonty (short for Jonathan) and my brother Tom and I are starting to make a few projects for our 200SX trackday car, with the first set of moulds just getting finished at the moment - we've made door cards to fit around the cage as the stock ones won't fit, so hopefully soon we'll get you some photos of the moulds in process and also our first finished parts which we will be making in the next few weeks.
We've had an issue with one of the moulds as we painted the buck in 1pack paint and this has reacted with the gelcoat - we knew this would happen after discussion with the easycomposites guys whilst preparing the buck, but we were too committed at that stage (already primed etc in 1pack) and so hoped waiting about 8 weeks before moulding would enable the solvents to evaporate out of the surface... it wasn't as bad as it could have been, but there are areas where the paint has stuck and we have damaged the tool surface trying to clean it up, and so the part will require more finishing that we want to remove the marks. Just like most of you guys, we learn by mistakes, but they sure as hell are frustrating - the 3 other moulds (other handed door card and infill panel for both sides) were made over 2pack bucks, and literally took a minute each to de-mould, then this one about 3hrs and we still have a lot of clearing up to do before we can start on the repair.
Another project on the go is a cold airbox which is in the 1-pack, one side of which is already moulded so will be a pig to release again; the other I'll use PVA release to provide a physical barrier and shouldn't give the same issue. As with the other projects, I'll get some threads up when we are closer to having a finished part.
Nice to meet you and I look forward to seeing your projects and sharing ours.
Jonty
