Hi,

I'm a sculptor making wood sculpture and want to protect it from the elements. Does anyone have any recommendations about which resin I should use?

Thanks

Rob

Hi Don't even think about coating it with resin, it will peel off. Boat guys have a tried and true way to protect wood from the sun. Spar Varnish.

I strongly disagree! Epoxy resins are very good at protecting wood from water, and the boatbuilding community has very good paints and clear coats to protect the epoxy from UV.

"Molten paraffin wax and a sheathing grade, two-component epoxy
material with no solvent were the very best finishes found in
this study for controlling moisture vapor movement into
wood. The MEE is a direct function of the number of coats
of finish applied to the wood (film thickness) and the length
of time of exposure to a particular humidity"

Three coats of epoxy will keep the water out.
