Hey Guyz,

Guess I should have made my intro shorter and got into the detail in this section but, since I've now posted it...

If you're into RC cars, you may be interested to read my intro...

Well, here's the first body out of the mould...

Only two layers of standard CF and I forgot to orient the second layer 45 degrees from the first. Probably the reason you can see light through it! A couple of niggles: First, the front lip. The CF wouldn't stay put and I had to keep pressing it back every now and then while it was curing. The shape ended up fine but the finish wasn't so hot. Second, the layers lifted up on one of the front wheel fairings. Looks good from one side but the other wasn't as I'd hoped. On the whole, the finish is pretty good and I reckon it's a pretty good start.

That was last weekend and the second went in this evening. This is a bit more ambitious: First layer is Pro Finish, diagonal to the body centre line. Next Kevlar tape all round the edge and finally a straight layer of standard CF. Of course, the whole lay-up was thicker than the first, so I was worried that the lip would end up worse. Then I had a brain-wave. Whether it'll work or not will remain to be seen but what I've done is slip the first-off moulding inside the mould with a layer of cling film to stop it sticking. This should hold everything against the mould and it'll be interesting to see how it comes out. I figure either it'll work very well or it'll be a complete dog's dinner...

Wish me luck! BigGrin

Thanks Joe. I'm hoping to be running it at Long Marston for the RC Speed Championships practice event next Sunday but TBH, it's my reserve car so I might not have time to sort it.

Bit of an update: I'm sure it'll come as no surprise to the more experienced forum members that the second-off didn't work out quite as well as I'd hoped. The "inner mould" pressed the lay-up into the mould, proper in some places but there were two areas where it pulled the layup away from the mould sufficiently to produce a void between the CF and the mould. Although the Kevlar does make the whole body far more robust, on balance, it's a bit of a pain to cut it, etc so I'm not likely to use it round the edge again. Think I'll go back to a straight 2-layer lay-up and make up a spare in case the first one gets trashed. Might add some strategically placed Kevlar tape after I've de-moulded.

Cheerz!

Have you considered the vacuum-infusion route?

I am also making RC bodies amongst other things... and after MUCH deliberation I ended up taking that route. With the cost and effort of it all I deemed it worth it.

If wanna continue your route, one of the guys at EC recommended me to use a release film from their site, and then some large car sponges, which you press into the entire mould and then the way i imagined it, using a wooden board to clamp the whole thing closed compressing the sponges and the reinforcement beneath it into all recesses.

It may be worth a try, wont be infusion standard, but most probably the best result u could get from this wet lay technique with a complicated and deep mould.

hope that helps and good luck!

ps what kinda speeds are you looking to achieve?

cheers

Hi BajaPatient. Thanks for the input. I had thought about using the vacuum technique and, I'm sure, if I had access to a vacuum pump, I would have tried it already. Certainly seems like the best option for small-scale or high-value production but seems a bit steep for a one-off. The alternative technique sounds interesting. How many car sponges do you think are needed??

TBH, this particular vehicle is more experimental than anything else. It's only about 22" long with a 1/14 scale chassis. Should be good for about 100mph but I'm using several aspects of this project to learn about construction and control techniques for a faster vehicle. Worth noting that the current world record is over 170mph.
