I need to laminate in some product information such as warnings, serial number etc but also want to do some graphics in small areas.

I would like to be able to print these using a standard inkjet/laser printer but unsure if special ink or which paper to use. I've had a search on t'interwebnet and found some people are using acid free rice paper and standard inkjet ink... if it is, is this the same stuff we used to eat as a kid?

Any ideas?

Thanks
Chris.

One method I've heard of but never tried is to coat what ever you are laminating in clear pva which will seperate the paper from the resin to prevent runs

Rice paper can be bought at any art store and is relatively inexpensive. It is sometimes referred to as "tracing paper" I use it all the time in my art work for rough sketches before I paint. I have also used it to print $100 bills on then lay it down on a project and clear over it. Its super thin and is easy to bury. One thing to factor is that once it gets wet it becomes transparent. So before I put the $100 onto the art work I spray the back of the paper white so the printed money doesnt get hidden by the base color

This isnt me, but this is basically what I am talking about. I would think that this would be the same approach for what you are wanting

That's awesome ^

But I imagine it wouldn't work for things like printed words for warnings and serial numbers like the op wants? Unless your letters were quite big, it would be extremely tedious to cut them out, spray them white, and then position them etc.

Yeah to cut out every letter would be pain staking at best but if they were to say print it out on 2"x3" label so to speak. Then cut that out and bury that. No different then the stickers auto manufacturers put under the hood or in the door jams of cars now.

Where I live we have good waves and so, many surf boards makers.

I used "stickers" from a local printer. Made over rice paper. I think (not sure) acrilyc painted (serigraphyed)

Results: The paper wetted nicely, but not completely transparent. Used epoxy resin.

The ink / paint is not completely permeable to resin. So, small voids appeared between ink and outer surface (clear gel coat).

Results are nice with PE. Ask the surfboards makers, they are using stickers succesfully for decades. Wink
