Hi all,

I understand PU is relatively resistant to solvent welding but I was wondering if anybody has had any success with it?  In particular I'm trying to weld PU plastic generated from this resin:  Xencast P6 Fast Cast Polyurethane Casting Resin

I've tried methyl chloride, ethanol, isopropanol, and acetone (all lab grade/pure).  Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Due to polyurethane being a thermoset plastic, I am not aware of any obtainable solvents that could be used for solvent welding with any PU (let alone our Xencast P6 Fast Cast).

However, polyurethane can be bonded and achieve a good bond strength with a methacrylate adhesive such as our VM100 Black 10min Methacrylate Adhesive.

Thanks for the reply.  The VM100 Black 10min Methacrylate Adhesive looks interesting.  I was looking at other non-solvent options based on PU including Gorilla Glue and Titebond, but noticed they swell as they cure.  I'm not sure if that's the case for VM100?  I'm trying to make a watertight enclosure -- do you think VM100 could create a watertight seal?

I see no reason why it would not be watertight.  Many variants of the Gorilla Glue, "swell" as they have a deliberate gap filling foaming action as they cure. This means they expand to fill any small gaps which helps them get a better bond for the likely rough applications those glues tend to see in "retail" and DIY customer usage.    The VM100 Black does not foam nor does it need to as most of the intended applications are unlikely to have any significant gaps to be filled in the same way.
