I remember people experimenting with hull textures / finishes some years ago in racing kayaks.  At one point the regatta lake ended up with a film of oil folloing all the boats!  When waxes and treatments were banned people found a 1200 grit 'satin' finish was best.  It can be achieved with 1200 grit paper or scotchbrite pads.  I guess it works like the sharkskin swim suits.

Thanks for all the replies and links.

Firstly I have to correct something - the "black stuff" is the least expensive CF cloth I've seen (I've only found out today what the "black stuff" is and that it doesn't just apply to all the black cloth sold at EC). It certainly looks like great value - I won't be buying cloth for a while yet, but I'm sure it'll be available again periodically in the future if I decide I need it.

I suggest using MTI Hose as well. It will solve your problem of an uneven flow front leaving dry spots, and considering you don't [seem to] have a lot of experience with infusion, it makes the whole process a hell of a lot more forgiving. It certainly isn't necessary, and it isn't exactly cheap, but it really does lower the risk of something going wrong by quite a bit. Beats stuffing up an infusion of this scale!

Thanks Hanaldo - I hadn't heard of MTI hose before. It looks as if it would simplify the process dramatically and remove a lot of the worry, so it may well be worth the cost. A failed infusion on something this size could be £1000 down the drain, so it has to be done right first go. I've found a thread about MTI hose here http://www.talkcomposites.com/2389/MTI-Hose which expresses some doubts about it, but it occurs to me that so long as there are still some empty areas where the resin has not reached this tube, you can still go on pulling a vacuum on the whole thing after clamping off the resin input to prevent it from forming any resin-rich areas.

Why? there is no air Wink .... it's a vacuum, it will (should) pull the resin into this area.


I was assuming it can't be a perfect vacuum, but maybe it's close enough that the worst that can happen is a few pinholes.

Durepox is available in a few solid colours as well, it will help with preventing scratches etc...


Ah - I see that I should be using it anyway (http://www.resene.co.nz/archspec/products/durepox.htm) as it offers reduced drag through the water. ("Durepox was tested by the Otago Flume Laboratory and results showed that its satin finish gave a 15% less drag coefficient than a high gloss surface on rowing skulls.")

If you intend on painting the surface, scrap the idea of woven fabrics, use UD / Biaxial / Triaxial / Quadraxial fabrics, MUCH stiffer (50-100%) than woven fabrics, given the nature of the curves on the boat, conforming the fabric shouldn't be a problem.

Yes. For the most part, the material only needs to follow shapes that plywood sheets can make, so flexibility of the cloth and its appearance isn't important. UD might be the way to go if I can work out the best way to align the layers and if the cost doesn't go too high (and if infusion is practical
with it). I should really spend a few hundred pounds doing experiments (testing panels to destruction) to see what works best and try to judge the best compromise on weight, strength and cost.

It's probably too early in the process to want to take up your time at the moment identifying the perfect materials, but I would like to take you up on that offer when the right time comes. I think I should get some practice in with a wide range of materials and do a bit of testing first, and do a lot more reading, and maybe go on a few courses. Studying a bit of engineering would also be a good plan so that I have a better idea about how to design strength in where it's needed, particularly as I'll need to put extra structure under the mast and across to the sides of the hull if I'm to attach foils at the sides of the boat (this part of the plan may well turn out to be totally impractical without adding a crippling amount of weight, so it may be best reserved for multihull projects - I think I'll drop it altogether for the first prototype).

[Edit: Or maybe not - I've now worked out where added strength to enable foiling is needed and it shouldn't add a massive amount of weight. The vertical sides of the hull need to be extra strong to hold the weight of the crew when there isn't water supporting the boat from below; the underside of the hull needs extra UD fibres running lengthwards to help it stand up to the forces generated by crashing down off a wave, and a beam right through the hull under the mast (side to side) should support the foils adequately such that the hull effectively hangs from it when foiling. I can do tests with cardboard models and weights to check the required relative strengths of different parts of the boat before doing any of it in CF.]

It's going to be a year or two before I'm ready to start building this thing, so at the moment I'm really just planning ahead and looking to see what might be possible. I currently work in programming and intend to get out of it once my current project is complete because being tied to a desk is an extremely unhealthy way to live. There are quite a few things I'd rather be doing, and many of them involve building things where carbon fibre is likely to be the best material to use. I had not imagined until the last couple of weeks that carbon fibre might be a practical material to work with in a small workshop without needing to buy hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of equipment, and this opens up all sorts of new possibilities for me. Another of the things I want to build is an enclosed recumbent cycle with electric assist, so that might be a better thing to work on as a first project as the pieces will be smaller. So many options, so it's hard to choose! But I definitely think this could be my future. What I wanted here, in this thread, was to explore whether my idea of building a weight-saving CF boat in a home workshop is practical or if it's just a pipedream. The answers make it look as if it may be viable, so that tells me it's worth putting in hundreds of hours doing a lot more research and acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills. I can revive this thread if/when I start preparing for the actual build and post pictures to show how it goes. Sadly I need to get my mind back onto my software project in the meantime so that I can cash in on it and raise the funds to start a new life in CF.

Eventually it would, but the issue with regular infusion is if the resin reaches the outlet before the dry spots fill then you start evacuating your resin from the part, which is a drama in itself.

Do a trial run for the infusion on a section of the boat rather than the whole thing.

I'd be looking at a marine foam core (Gurit M80 or similar) with the simple shapes you should be able to get the core to conform pretty easily.


Thanks for that suggestion. I'll have to try a bit of it and a variety of other materials to see which works best on a small hull, and I need to find out which is easiest to work with if the performance is similar. Lots of experiments to do.

I'd also look into a marine UV topcoat, Durepox is marine proven but it's 2k polyurethane


I'll look into that too if I decide to leave any surfaces unpainted - perhaps the underside of the hull, and that could well be exposed to a lot of sunlight if the boat's stored upside down for long periods.

Lots more research to do first though - this is clearly not something I should rush into without gaining an extensive understanding first.

I have a few test samples of "sandwiches" using  200 Twill + 350 gsm Satin + soric and then 350 satinweave - 200 gsm twill  --

This is a lot stronger and stiffer than 3 mm marine ply --- total weight is around 2,5 kg per sq. meter ..

This was infused with EC IN2 epoxy ..

You could probably get a strong enough Soric core sandwich using just 4 layers of 200gsm twill .. or to be safer replace one layer with 200gsm kevlar/cf mix or Twaron/cf mix.


2kg per sq. metre is what I'd like to aim for, so 4 layers of 200 plus Soric would hopefully get close to that and still have enough strength for the job (though the carbon fibre biaxial 300g may be worth a go for the inner layers in places where more strength looks worthwhile). Using kevlar/cf for one of the layers is something I was planning on - I want to err on the side of building the prototype slightly too weak in order to find out where it breaks so that I can learn where I need to add more cloth on the next boat. I don't fancy being in something that breaks up into loose shards, and it's better to have a heavily fractured bit of hull than a gaping hole, so kevlar or something with similar properties is a must - carbon aramid plain weave looks sutiable as I'll have to paint over most of the external surfaces anyway to keep the heat down in strong sunlight, and to make the boat look sufficiently ordinary that it won't attract attention.

Given the simple shape of the Mirror dinghy it could probably be infused in one go .. BigGrin but the total size may be a problem for a full infusion.


I've seen three videos of infusion of hulls (though not CF) and it looks achievable. Two were of similar size to a Mirror and the other was a 43 foot thing being built in India. The way to do it seems to be to have three or more tubes that the epoxy goes in through, starting from one running along the middle, then when it passes the other tubes to the side, epoxy is let in through them as well to make it easier for it to flow the rest of the way from there up to the top edges. Multiple vacuum pumps can be used in combination with a tube right round the rim of the hull and sections of that tube can be clamped off once the epoxy reaches them. It would be expensive to get it wrong though. One particular concern I have is how to deal with strengthened parts where more cloth is used - it could cause the infusion front to be held back there and it might be overtaken to either side and then be encircled, thereby leaving an air pocket.

You could use a thinner/lighter version of the same core-sandwich to build the internal bulkheads for storage and bouyancy ..


The way the wood's doubled up where buoyancy tanks meet in the normal Mirror suggests they may have an important structural role in those places, and particularly the ones in line with the mast where high forces are transmitted to the hull, so I'd want to copy that and make them thicker rather than thinner. It's the same at the back where the high forces can be generated by the rudder and the whole stern area needs to be strong enough to take them. It's better to stay close to what's already well tried and tested. The parts of the Mirror that were strengthened in the Mk 2 version of the boat give useful clues as to where the Mk 1 was too weak and overly strong - the storage compartments opened up in the Mk 2 show that the original structure under the mast was stronger than necessary. The Mk 3 also gives some hints as to how to simplify the task of making plastic/CF versions - it eliminates parallel sides and overhangs in the interior so that it can be moulded in a single piece (not including the thwart and centreboard case) which is then glued in. I want to build an interior more like the Mk 2 though as it's much better for providing storage.. (Here are pictures of the three types.)

I can use an old wooden one to make the outer mould from, just so long as it hasn't distorted too much over time. I may rework part of the shape under the front end to improve its aerodynamics because I want to try fitting hydrofoils to it (canting L foils, one to either side of the hull), so the airflow under the hull at a forty five degree angle is important - the boat should have enough sail area to be capable of flying on foils in a strong breeze, and once up on foils it should be able to rip along at a speed approaching that of a non-foiling catamaran. I'm hoping to go on to build a much bigger four-hulled foiler, but I need to learn how to work with carbon fibre first, so it makes sense to start with something relatively inexpensive for a first project. I'll try doing a 12 foot foiling catamaran too after the Mirror.

It isn't the cheapest I've seen, but you generally get what you pay for. What really surprises me about carbon fibre though is how affordable the cloth actually is. Having watched hours of video I can now see that the real expense is in the time you have to put in working with it, so whether you use CF or fibreglass makes a farily small difference to the cost. I looks as if it might be possible to build a much better boat than the best plastic Mirrors for a similar amount of money, and lower cost for subsequent hulls by reusing the moulds.

Make a few more and sell them ... BigGrin Someone will buy one, and you can recover some of the cost ...


There are copyright issues that would prevent me from selling them, unless I can get my version recognised as an official Mirror dinghy (Mk 5). That might be possible if the idea of a 3-mode Mirror dinghy appeals enough to the right people: with weights added it could potentially compete as a classic Mirror; without added weights and with the addition of a bowsprit and asymmetric kite (replacing the spinnaker) it could compete as an asymmetric Mirror in handicap fleets (to close the gap on its modern rivals), and with the hydrofoils it could be used for high speed racing. I'm really more interested in using it for travel though, so it doesn't matter if they don't approve of it.

Leaving peelply on the entire inner surface it will be very easy to bond these in, along with fasteners and reinforcements ..
