You seem to have a big grudge against this company as this is second topic you've started slating them, almost exactly a year apart!

Whats the problem with the resin? as long as they get good results (seeing the rest of their parts in the video)
And the customer is looking for a cosmetic perfect looking part with a deep shine and not the lightest part I don't see any problem.

Yeh in the end, skinning is never going to be about saving weight. The process itself is adding weight, so what's an extra 100 grams of resin if it gives you a better finish? Would be interested to see what they say about heating Acetone though, that sounds intriguing...

Not sure where the heated acetone is coming from, I've watched the video and my interpretation is the flames are supposedly demonstrating how fire retardant the material/finish is.

From a H&S view, we all know how dangerous the materials are we work with but in my opinion there is not point risking yourself or your workshop by heating an already very unstable liquid!!! Acetone flashpoint is something like -30deg C (from memory) so it's just waiting to go up. I ask the question, would you heat petrol?.... no, so why heat acetone!

yep ... really ---  DO NOT HEAT ACETONE!!! .....    Not only is it EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE, with a very low flash point (-20 C), it also has a very nasty tendency to create nearly perfect "flashovers" from one container to the next... + the fumes are explosive when in the right "fuel -air" mixture.

I personally do not give a hoot about some company selling BS, it always backfires in some way ... Laugh

Most steering wheels are made with a steel "wire/rod" core and some sort of cast hard rubber on top, sometimes the wheel rim is part of an alloy casting, that makes it a bit more tricky.

If you remove the hard rubber, you can cut and reshape the steel rod /alloy, then use fibre-reinforced resin or hard rubber to cast a new thick "handle" on to the steel, using some form of mould.

you can do this to only a part of the steering wheel, or the whole wheel, completely reshaping it.  You could make a nicely surfaced "mould" and lay up CF directly..
