a couple questions-- trying to make my list of materials-- after my tooling gelcoat what weights of fiberglass for the shell of the mold? as best i can figure i need one lighter material to conform to the mold shape and then heavier to build up the outer shell??? and how many layers (for the outer shell)in total for say an auto hood/bonnet?
and as i recall from the tutorial for hood/bonnet when the gelcoat is tacky then i can build my fiberglass layers up ?
thanks

A lot depends on the shape/size of the Mould, but as a general guide I use 1 or 2 layers of 80grm CSM on top of the Gelcoat to stop "print through" into the Mould surface. Followed by 3/4 layers of 450grm CSM. If it's a large part say a bonnet I use 4 layers and then add some timber "stiffeners" glassed onto the back around the outer edge. This gives you a strong Mould and a flat/stable surface when laying up. There is nothing worse than a Mould "rocking" about on the workbench when trying to lay up, especially when doing Infusion. |
