I am planning to make a hammock for our campervan using two Carbon Fibre tubes that will be fixed to the 'A' and 'B' posts of the vehicle (across the front seats, above the steering wheel). I will have some metal inserts made that will be bonded into the ends which will allow the tubes to be hooked onto brackets mounted on the A and B posts. I will be using canvas as the material to support the (small) occupant. The tubes will be approx. 1200mm (front) and 1400mm (rear) long.
Although there are hammock available to buy, their poles are made from mild steel and as we intend to do a lot of touring in our (old) campervan keeping weight down is a priority. The existing versions are good for a max load of 70kg. From photos the tube diameter looks to be around 1" or less.
The front tube will need to be extendable to aid fitting and having them both extendable would also be useful for storage too.
What size tubes do you recommend I purchase to support the approximate weight of 70kg? With regard to making the tube extendable, what is the maximum clearance allowed between the two tubes inner and outer diameters? Also what adhesive to bond sandblasted inserts with?
