Does anyone know where I can get a cheap vacuum pump?

Yeh have a look for the vacuum pumps that are used to service air conditioning systems. These will work fine and can be found very cheap.

Can you point me in the right direction?

For example. Higher stated CFM than the EC offering at a quarter of the price. No idea on longevity or reliability, but for £64.........

To be fair, thus is an oil bath system, and the one from ec is a oil cycle construction. Bathed systems will always "smoke" a little oil vapour wich will settle all around the pump. If you do this on a regular basis the investment in a vapourless pump should be worth it. On the other hand, oil bath pumps produce a distinctive sound as long as there is a leak in your bag.
