Mould release

My mould is made of MDF and I am using it as my pattern .
I am unable to release my carbon fibre part from it .
Every time I do a lay up I have to cut either the cured part or the mould.
Please suggest a good procedure for this case.

Hi Bud,

The MDF would certainly soak up the release agent so it wouldn't be any use for your process.

The best way to go (for me and it works) it to put a layer of catalyzed gel coat down on to the MDF and wait for it to cure, then rub it down so you have a nice smooth gel coat surface. Make sure you work your way through the grits ending up with 2000 grit wet and dry, then polish with cutting compound.

Then do 6 coats of release agent leaving 15 minutes between each Coat. you shouldn't have any more problems.

Let us know how you get on!

I second that! or use a coat of pigmented epoxy on top, the mdf will suck up some of the resin and saturate, then you can sand and polish and work on a nice surface
