Bonding metal to carbon

Hi All,

I have a problem bonding metal to carbon fibre, I'm using sikaflex, which I have never had a problem with before, but it keeps "sliding" out of the bond.  There is a good key on both parts and they are fully degreased using acetone.  The problem seems to be the aluminium keeps sliding out of the sikaflex and not bonding.  I need to get it fixed for next weekend so any help is much appreciated!

This is what I am trying to stick into a kayak here and I have attached a picture of the problem.  There is a large bonding area it doesn't seem to want to stay put!  I have been able to pick the boats up by this part in the past, so something is definitely going a miss!

I have also tested bonding from the same tube using a carbon carbon bond and it holds up as well as it should so it's not a bad batch.

Thanks,
Tom

For Sikaflex there is probably a specific primer needed for bonding to aluminum.

You should also consider using a methacrylate adhesive like Plexus.
