For me the desired finish depends on the part and its location, engineered components look best in flat or Satin, small decorative items look best in gloss and large carbon areas look too garish in gloss, a satin again compliments the weave on large panels.
F1 cars always seem to select the best finishes for the location, even though I guess that's not the actual reason why, but they look more purposeful in situ.
