I want to know which model of Omega CN7800 you are using, can you tell me? Thank you.

Is there any way I could see the photos again. Sorry I am 3 years late.

Theres many ways to skin a cat, just depends how involved you want to get. Reliability was key for me, I didnt want to be messing around with things not working as expected. A PID isnt a huge expense, even for the Omega controller. If you want cheaper, just get one off ebay for 30 bucks. But from my perspective, you can easily bin $500 of pre-preg if things go wrong, so a good controller is just peace of mind.

10° fluctuations are massive. You ideally want to be within 1° of your target temperature if you want repeatability and reliability. 10° can easily be the difference between a great result, or a destroyed part and mould because you went beyond your moulds Tg.

Hi thanks for this interesting thread.

I am wondering if an inexpensive bi-metallic or capillary thermostatic switch would not suffice, eliminating both the controller and relay? There would be fluctuations in temperature of <10°c but couldn't the cutoff temp be increased slightly or the time be extended to compensate for that?   Do you use the Omega's PID control function?

If the fluctuations of a bi-metallic/capillary thermostat are too wide then a simple thermocouple, an Arduino and a few lines of code could be used to control the relay for consistent temperature control at a small fraction of the cost of a PID controller.

I can see how that would work! Where did you get it?

Hanaldo,
I found this type of fan to be better (centrifugal) as it gave better circulation and more even temps around my oven (8ft x 4ft x 3ft)

The SSR is just a generic 40A DC switching AC SSR from Jaycar.

The PID controller is an Omega CN7800. I would suggest making sure you get the one that had an internal power supply for the output, otherwise you will have to wire in an external 9v power source to switch the relay. Not hard, but messier and a pain in the ass. I believe they are the same price, so it's just a matter of clarifying with Omega which model you want.

You wouldn't have any issues at all building this same design a fair bit bigger. Just make sure you have the internal frame structure to support the shape of the oven as MDF will want to change shape if it can. You will also obviously need a number of heating elements and potentially more than one fan as well.

Thanks for this - looks really good
Can you send me the details of the SSR and the PID you have used please?
I am looking to build something similar (but a bit bigger) to cook my boat in...

Alright, photo's are back up. Took me a bit longer than expected because Photobucket is a nightmare to use from your phone, but hopefully the links last a bit longer. Also sorry about the image sizes, Photobucket shrinks them down quite a lot. Big enough to get the idea though!
